I hate the world “tolerate”
Balanced, rounded, sweet
With airs of benevolence, virtue
Honorable, kind, elite
But friends don’t go and be fooled
Why not? I hear you ask
“Tolerate” belies its evil plan
Prejudice hides behind its mask
The folks you’d never see for lunch
Scum who shouldn’t join our gym
Who’ll ruin the neighborhood left amok
Never in our pools to swim
Come on, clench your nice white teeth
Go ahead, bear it and grin
You have it within you to tolerate
And feel the hate within

OMG, you portrayed it perfectly! I love the message. I never looked at tolerance like that. It’s kind of scary.

Thank you Esther and Chagit for reading and for your comments.
Chagit, I’ve always been uncomfortable with the “tolerance” as opposed to the uses of “acceptance” or “mutual respect” between individuals or peoples. This piece was the result of a writing prompt “pick a word you dislike and write about it”.

Awesome!! You’ve got real talent Raizel! Besides the great rhythm, you brought out the word/ concept of tolerance versus acceptance – as such, that one wouldn’t otherwise stop to contemplate! Such wisdom!
