A stray feather lies on the grass
It shivers a little along with the breeze
Pearly white with a hint of grey
Stranded by its owner between the trees
It sways alone in a feeble dance
Snubbed by the vast world up above
Thrust helplessly by the wind
Detached from the plumage of the dove
It had been the bird’s insulation
The cushion against erratic weather
Allowing the dove to spread wings and soar
Performing its role as a perfect feather
Yet here it lies in a field forlorn
Its function depleted and potential lost
Shed from the dove who’d endured a moult
This little feather had been casually tossed
For nights and days, it travels with the gale
Across the field and over the stones
Along the trees, around wildflowers
A vulnerable little feather on its own
Thenceforth, one day a man walks by
Gazing down in a subdued, wretched stance
A pearly white feather with a hint of grey
Catches his eye as he stands in a trance
Lifting it up his find with gentle hands
The man strokes the feather in appeal
It’s delicate and beautiful, ideal for a hat
He sticks it in his own and turns on his heel

This is a beautiful piece of poetry!!! You definitely captured my heart! I had so many different thoughts on this and I was wondering, what were your thoughts Suri -when you were writing this? Would you share?

Chaya, thank you!
Well, actually when I was writing the poem I kinda also had many thoughts and ideas buzzing in my brain about it. One of them was the idea of having talents and abilities that for some reason can’t be used in some way (e.g. singing in front of men – kol isha), and making use of it in another better way (singing for old age homes, singing to bring happiness to sick kids…etc).
Another thought that came up; having a personality trait e.g. jealousy, and learning how to use it for the positive instead of the negative . E.g. being jealous of a person’s good deeds, wanting to reach their level of achievement.
But the one that I think plays the biggest role in this poem; relationships. Marriage…friendship…I don’t think I have to explain this one. Just read the poem again 🙂
