Iโ€™d like to thank my zygocactus for teaching me a really important lesson. Thanks, bud-dy (I knowโ€“groooooan! Just couldnโ€™t resist! ๐Ÿ˜†)

See, when I bought this fella, it had these incredible flowers growing literally right out of its leaves! I brought it home and adoringly replanted it in a gorgeous, big pot, right there on my kitchen counter where I could shower it with love and attention. I talked toโ€“um, letโ€™s try that one again ๐Ÿ˜. I, er, watered it, dusted it, and all-out WILLED it to thrive. Spoiler alert: It died. ๐Ÿ˜ข

Well, not exactly. But it did stop growing. The flowers dropped off and never reappeared. Iโ€™ve been faithfully tending this this poor plant on my counter, trying to nurse it back to health for two whole years. (Yeah, I know. Take up knitting, Riva! ๐Ÿ˜„)

Couple of weeks ago I went to the nursery to buy some new flowers for my porch and, of course, out came my whole zygocactus sob story. Sympathy? Nope. The guy legit laughed in my face.

โ€œYou have that thing in your kitchen? Itโ€™s an OUTDOOR plant, lady!โ€

Whoops! Basking in the Great Outdoors, itโ€™s now GROWING! ๐ŸŒท๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒน๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿฅณ

So hereโ€™s the take-away: Growing things requires time and patience, whether itโ€™s a novel or a writing skill or a project or a business. But, of course, we all knew that already.

What Zygie taught me is something deeper: Along with time, patience, and determination, thereโ€™s another angle to consider: do we need to make a change?
That change, no matter how small, may be just the thing to sprout the success weโ€™re hoping for.

Heya Elisheva- can you recommend which courses and classes helped you with your writing?

      Hi FF!

I have a membership to Jessica Brody’s writing mastery academy ($12 monthly) and have taken most of her courses there as well as read her book. I’m also a fan of Jerry Jenkin’s blog, which is free, and has great writing and editing tips, plus Lauren Sapala’s intuitive writing course (hey, didn’t you recommend me that one?), which is like the opposite of Jessica Brody’s approach, but since I’m pretty strong in both the left and right brain I appreciate both.

I was waiting for you to say Jessica Brody! I’m in middle of taking The Foundations of Fiction course on Udemy and I just signed up for her Writing Mastery Academy. I’m so excited to have access to all her courses. I would say I’m also pretty strong in both the right and left side of my brain so who’s Lauren Sapala?
