I wrote this for a support group I’m a part of and figured I’d share it with you to hear you thoughts 🙂

    The Sound of Silence

What does silence mean to you?

    How does it sound?

Is it a pleasant backdrop, or does it make you frown?

What does silence mean to you?

Do you embrace it with grace, or do you send it away on a chase?

What does silence mean to you?

Do you take it in with thirst, or eagerly wait for it to burst?

What does silence mean to you?

Does it heal your soul and calm your mind?

Does it offer you some space to ground from the daily grind?

Silence is healing, it is a powerful tool,

Take time to listen to it and see what it has to offer you

    An intriguing title…

    Sometimes silence is so loud…

Then, you need a poem like this to realize that silence has beauty too. Make good use of it. It won’t last forever…

    Echoing what HappiWriter wrote-

I love this perspective on silence…

PassionforWriting, I can see what a deep thinking person you are by reading your poem! People often understand silence in a wrong way. Thank you for bringing out the right point with your stunning poem!
Just as a side point, a quote I once read: “Don’t be a parrot in life, be an eagle. A parrot
talks way too much but can’t fly high but an eagle is silent and has the will
    power to touch the sky.”

Beautiful quote, Bookwarm, and thank you all for your warm compliments!

HappyWriter, what do you mean by the silence being so loud? Meaning, that’s it’s deafening and you want some “noise”?

Yup. It’s a poetic way of saying just that…

      I love the quote, bookworm!!

HappiWriter, what do you mean that “it’s a poetic way of saying just that”?

PassionforWriting, I really like this poem because it shows the power of shetika in such an innovative way.

I also love that quote! It`s brilliant, especially if one takes the message out of it.
I think what HappiWriter means, is that sometimes there is too much silence and it can get uncomfortable… Am I right, HappiWriter? Please correct me if I am wrong!

    Thank you Sury!!

And, ya, Bookworm, I also think that that’s what HappiWriter means.

    Bookworm, you got it 🙂

Well, the poem is titled, “The Sound of Silence”…
What does silence sound like to you? For some, it’s a calm, pleasing voice.
But for some, it’s a lonely voice — moaning and begging to be dispelled.
Yes, sometimes, silence can be very loud.

PassionforWriting, your poem is so powerful.

I recently discovered the healing effect of silence in safe relationships. Your words make us question our love/hate relationship with silence- how far we can embrace it, how awkward it makes us feel.

Since I had been thinking about the power of silence lately, I composed an answer to your question. Literally:) Read your poem, sat down, and penned my thoughts about what silence means to me.

It’s personal, so it may be vague for readers, but let me not put out too many disclaimers;) Oh, and I used ‘you’ in my description. I had someone in mind, but you can plug in the safe ‘you’ of choice…

Enjoy! And I’d love brutally honest feedback.

    Silence alone

    Is a heady grey

    Abuzz

    With empty noise

    Silence alone

    Is blurring days

    Years

    Without rain

    Silence alone

    Is a vacant trove

    Devoid

    Of hope to glow

    Silence alone

    Is unable to love

    Hollow

    Of a useful promise

    Silence with you

    Is a sacred white

    A soundless

    Sprinkled whisper

    Silence with you

    Is a soothing light

    A holding

    Wordless embrace

    Silence with you

    Is an infinite bond

    Nurturing

    Unspoken intensity

    Silence with you

    Is a moment so fond

    Revealing

    Soundless expression

Mali, your poem is breathtaking! Has a very soft sound to it which fits perfectly with the theme!

I’m sure everyone has that “you” in their life that would fit this poem…

    Thank you, Chagit!

When writing poetry, I always hope the ‘sound’ comes through, more than the words themselves.

hope everyone has that ‘you’. Or at least meets one at some point:)

Mali, after I read your poem I felt, ah, silence defined. Let me reread the other.

And Passionforwriting, I really liked it. It wasn’t overly gushing or passionate, just asking questions and getting the reader thinking. I will confess to remembering, and identifying with, Dr. Twerski describing being in spa waters for his back in his mid30s, and after 5 minutes he was convinced the half hour was up. It wasn’t easy to be alone in and with the silence.

Mali!  I love, love, love  it, and I love your answers! It’s breathtaking and so soothing just by reading it!

And yeah, Fayge, it’s not easy to sit with silence. I embrace it because it provides me a safe and soothing space.

Thank you, Fayge and PassionforWriting. So appreciate your compliments!

I love that anecdote about Rabbi Twerski. Think about all the less-than-meaningful words we use in discussion, just to fill empty space…

You gals?  I’m digging this poetry thread.  So much so, all the imagery of silence got me thinking of absence.  Writing a poem for one of my characters now:

      Okay, you got me there.

I’m so curious. What’s the story behind this character??

      Waiting…

P.s. If anyone can teach me how to align a poem in the center when posting on this forum, I will consider myself blessed.  Thanks in advance.

This thread is really awesome. All the poems are great!

PassionForWriting, I love the poem and I know I’m repeating here, but I love the perspective on silence… about the power of silence

Mali, your poem is beautiful, just … beautiful! I dont know what else to say.

And ff, your poem is awesome! It’s short, but so powerful! Can I ask about this character you mentioned? You got me curious…

Also ff-by where it says visual and text, if you’re on the visual tab there should be a center align button…

Mali, I got the shivers…I know, cliche…but there is nothing cliche about your poem.  The idea is so original, and you have talent to do such a good job bringing it together – love it!

Meira, I used the center align button but all I got was a bunch of rows and arrows that made my post look like alien code.  Thanks for the suggestion, though.  Could be I am the only one experiencing this issue and that means I have to report to tech support.

And to all who question the background of my story character, here’s the least I can share with you:  The story is about a character mourning the death of a sibling who died by drowning.  The focus is given to the aftereffects of the death.

Anyway!  All for now.  More to come later.  Thank you all for your encouragement and support and yes, even your ganging up on me.  Tough love is love nonetheless.

    xoxo
