It hits me like a stone,
reverberating in my bones
when I learn
that my child
has autism.
Then I’m struck by a boulder,
that’s so difficult to shoulder
when another child
is diagnosed
with autism.
It feels as heavy as rock
and yet why am I so shocked
when I realize
that my husband
has autism?
I just do the best I can
for my children and my man
but it seems
that I lose ME
to autism.
I don’t know Hashem’s plan
and can’t possibly understand,
but somehow
He’ll give me strength
when my knees buckle.
I know that all I do for them
is the way I serve Hashem
and so I write
so I can be true
and be ME.

This is startling in strength. It belies all the beauty, break and coming together that one can hope to anticipate in a poem. It is heartbreaking and hopeful. It demands to be read. I’m so happy you have the space to express yourself. I throughly enjoyed this poem.

Wow, Sarah, I can’t believe you have enough Menuchas HaNefesh to express yourself so clearly, considering that you take care of three people with autism! Hashem should give you Koach to persevere
